Lesson Plans for Learning Standard #7
Underground Railroad Lesson Plans
I wrote this lesson plan for my fourth grade students to help them have the opportunity to discover about the Underground Railroad. It is a 3-tiered lesson to reach all students in the classroom.
I developed these stations to help students discover about the Underground Railroad. This can be used along with the Underground Railroad Lesson Plan.

This activity includes three reproducible “quilt squares.” On a quilt square, a student will write a vocabulary word or the name of a significant person, and then the word definition or the person’s significance. Students will also color their squares. The squares may be hung on the bulletin board to form a vocabulary quilt.

Ohio served as the northern “trunk line” of the Underground Railroad, a system of secret routes used by free people in the North & South to help slaves escape to freedom. Escape routes developed throughout Ohio with safe houses where slaves could be concealed during the day. Many cities in Ohio today have houses that were once used by fugitive slaves heading north along the Underground Railroad. (I used some of these ideas in my Lesson plan listed below.)

List of lessons divided by grade level about the Underground Railroad. The one listed for 4th grade is about Harriet Tubman.
|
A unit plan about the Underground Railroad that includes a variety of activities such as a Harriet Tubman play, Webquest, and a Reader's Theater.
|
This unit about the Underground Railroad is based on Ohio's New Learning Standards for 4th grade. It includes great activities such as an Underground Webquest, using quilts to tell the story of the Underground Railroad, and creating a timeline of the events of the Underground Railroad.
|
Using information gained through the primary source and supplementary literature activities, students will better understand the main points of the Fugitive Slave Act and how slavery impacted the lives of those living in the North and the South. (5th grade lesson plan, but it would be great to use with your gifted students.)
